The DVDPlay kiosk service was launched in 2004, when Silicon Valley-based DVDPlay installed its first retail kiosks in 140 McDonald’s locations in Denver. The company eventually phased out its DVDPlay kiosks in April 2005 and sold its assets to Flextronics International (FTI), maker of Xbox and Zune. Its designers included John Rupert and Steven Hancock, and the franchisees have the option of receiving purchase payments via credit card or email.

After the initial lawsuit, Redbox sued Universal and Lionsgate Entertainment Corp. over alleged antitrust violations. A federal judge is expected to rule on the lawsuits soon. But the lawsuits aren’t the only thing Redbox has to worry about. Several other companies, including Netflix Inc., are also suing Redbox, and Redbox has been filing several antitrust lawsuits against them as well. The lawsuits have been amended several times to reflect the restrictions placed on kiosks.

While Blockbuster has a stronger name recognition than Redbox, NCR hasn’t seen that as a negative. The company plans to convert the kiosks under the Blockbuster Express brand and challenge Redbox Automated Retail LLC for the top spot. DVDPlay, which has 1,300 kiosks, will end up with roughly 3,800 kiosks in the United States. However, it won’t outstrip Redbox’s U.S. location count.

In addition to Redbox DVDs, you can also play Netflix, workout DVDs, AV DVDs, 99-title DVDs, and AV discs with the 5KPlayer. It supports MP4 and MKV video files. It can even play a video that was recorded using an iPod, such as MKV. With these great features, it’s a real winner! There’s no reason why you should use an older DVD player when a brand new one will do the job perfectly.

NCR is one of the nation’s largest ATM makers and has just launched its DVD kiosks as part of a larger strategy to capture the entertainment industry. Currently, Coinstar’s Redbox has nearly 22,000 kiosks across the U.S., including Wal-Mart, McDonald’s, and even some Fortune 500 locations. Last year, Redbox made $774 million in sales, a fraction of its target market of $950 million.
